Review VerdictSony has come a long way since they entered the system market several years ago. During this journey We became a bit skeptical because of various quality issues. However, it seems as if they are finally getting their act together now. Unlike with their APS-C format lenses we have yet to experience significant centering issues with Sony's full format E-mount lenses for instance (and we are keeping our fingers crossed that this statement will stand the test of time). The Sony FE 90mm f/2.8 G OSS macro is a good example how things improved. In terms of optical quality it is easily playing on the same levels as its DSLR counterparts. In terms of sharpness the Sony lens has probably surpassed them. The center quality is excellent at f/2.8 and extreme at f/4 and f/5.6. Furthermore the borders/corners are also impressive especially considering the high density sensor used for the tests. Lateral CAs are generally a non-issue. The vignetting figures are about typical for a lens in this class. The RAW image distortions is just slightly worse although this is rather irrelevant for everything but repro work and in this case you can rely on image auto-correction anyway. On the downside we are not so much convinced of the way the lens is rendering out-of-focus highlights. The general quality of out-of-focus blur is very good if not excellent though. The amount of bokeh fringing is negligible. On the mechanical side, it doesn't feel quite as rock solid as say the Zeiss FE 55mm f/1.8 OSS or the Sony FE 70-200mm f/4 G OSS. However, we admit that this is mostly subjective. The lens barrel feels a bit hollow but formally there's nothing wrong with the construction. We certainly appreciate the weather sealing. The precision of manual focusing could be a bit better especially considering the fact that the lens is relying on the focus-by-wire approach. The AF is quite fast although not on the level of comparable Canon/Nikkor DSLR lenses. We aren't completely convinced whether the generally high pricing of Sony lenses is always justified but at least in this case, it remains relatively sane in relation to the delivered quality. While the Sony FE 90mm f/2.8 G OSS macro isn't perfect, it is still easily good enough for our "highly recommended" mark!

Field Notes02
Sony FE 90mm F2.8 G OSS is a prime macro lens for Sony E/FE full-frame cameras, designed for close-up photography with optical image stabilization and a bright f/2.8 aperture.
