Lens adapters: which lenses fit which cameras

An adapter lets a lens made for one camera system work on another. One number per mount decides if the lens can still focus to infinity: the flange distance. This page explains the rule, what you lose, and which of 48 lens mounts adapt to which cameras.

Why the flange distance decides

The flange distance (also called flange focal distance or register) is the space between the mount flange, the metal ring that the lens locks onto, and the sensor or film. Each mount has one fixed value. A lens is made to form a sharp image at exactly that distance.

An adapter is a ring or tube with a lens mount on the front and a camera mount on the back. It can add distance, but it cannot remove it. So a lens adapts to a camera when the lens mount has the longer flange distance. The adapter fills the difference.

Distance from the sensor (left edge) to the lens flange, to scale. A Sony E camera is 26 mm shallower than a Canon EF camera, so a 26 mm adapter fills the gap. The opposite cannot work: the Sony E lens would have to sit 26 mm inside the Canon body.

A lens that sits too far from the sensor acts as if it is on an extension tube: it focuses closer, but it cannot focus on distant subjects. That is why mirrorless cameras, with flange distances near 20 mm, take lenses from almost every SLR system, and why DSLRs, near 45 mm, take few.

How much room an adapter needs

An adapter needs some material for its two mounts. We list a pair only when the gap is at least 1.46 mm. That is the gap of the M42-to-Canon EF adapter (45.46 mm − 44.00 mm), one of the thinnest plain adapters in common use, and it reaches infinity focus.

With less room, the adapter is too thin to make, or the lens bayonet does not fit inside the camera mount. A Leica R lens (47.00 mm) on a Nikon F camera (46.50 mm) leaves only 0.50 mm. A few pairs work with less room because a small screw mount can sit inside a wide bayonet. For example, Pentax made an adapter for M42 lenses on its K-mount cameras, and both mounts have the same flange distance. We do not list these special cases.

An adapter with glass can let a lens with a shorter flange distance focus to infinity. The glass acts like a weak teleconverter: it makes the focal length longer and usually lowers image quality. A focal reducer does the opposite: it makes the image smaller for a smaller sensor. It also needs a lens with a longer flange distance than the camera.

What you lose with an adapter

Aperture control
Many lenses have no aperture ring. The camera sets the aperture with electronic contacts (Canon EF, Sony E and most mirrorless lenses) or with a mechanical lever (Nikon G, Minolta and Sony A, Pentax DA). On a plain adapter the aperture stays at one value. Lever lenses need an adapter with its own aperture ring. Electronic lenses need an electronic adapter. In the table, these mounts have the tag “Electronic lens” or a note.
Autofocus and focus by wire
Autofocus needs an electronic adapter that passes commands between camera and lens, and these exist for some pairs only. Many mirrorless lenses focus by wire: the focus ring sends a signal to a motor. Without power from the camera, such a lens cannot focus at all.
Exact thickness
The adapter must match the gap to a fraction of a millimetre. If it is too thick, the lens does not reach infinity focus. If it is too thin, the lens focuses past infinity and the distance scale is wrong.
Mount width and rear elements
A narrow camera mount can block light from a lens with a large rear element, so the corners get darker. On a DSLR, a rear element that sticks out can hit the mirror when it moves up.
Sensor size
A lens projects an image circle for one format. An APS-C lens on a full-frame camera gives dark corners unless you use the camera's crop mode. A full-frame or medium format lens on a smaller sensor works, but the sensor uses only the centre of the image, so the view is narrower.
Leaf shutters and missing controls
Many medium format lenses have a leaf shutter (tag “Leaf shutter”), and the adapter must hold it open. Contax G lenses have no focus ring, so their adapters have a focus dial.
Stabilisation and lens data
Lens stabilisation, lens corrections and EXIF data need an electronic adapter. With a plain adapter on a camera with in-body stabilisation, enter the focal length in the camera menu.

Compatibility table

Each row is a lens mount, from the longest flange distance to the shortest. A red square means a plain adapter has at least 1.46 mm of room on that camera mount. A black square means the camera takes the lens natively. Follow a catalog link to see the lenses for that mount.

Mounts not in this table

The catalog lists more mounts than this table. We leave out a mount when its name covers more than one system (for example M39, which is both a Leica screw mount and a Zenit SLR mount), when the sources disagree, or when we found only one source. We also leave out C-mount and other small screw mounts. Some adapters for them sit partly inside the camera mount, so the simple gap rule does not describe them. Systems with interchangeable mount parts, such as Tamron Adaptall, are also left out. Lens pages for these mounts show no adapter section.

Sources

Flange distances come from two published tables that agree, or from the maker of the mount. Where the tables differ by a fraction of a millimetre (Leica M, Minolta SR, Rollei QBM, Pentax 67), we use the smaller value, which gives the smaller gap. Data checked October 2026.
